Island utilities
Plan for resilience, not just connection.
A home in Antigua & Barbuda needs a utility plan that reflects dry periods, storms, local service availability and the realities of island maintenance. Rainwater storage, mains services, backup power and more than one route to connectivity can all matter, but the right specification depends on the property, location and current provider advice.
- Water
- Cistern planning plus APUA supply where available
- Power
- Grid connection, surge protection and site-specific backup
- Connectivity
- Confirm fibre or satellite availability by address
Water security
Treat storage and supply as a joined-up system.
APUA describes water as a constrained resource and says Antigua has expanded reverse-osmosis production to reduce dependence on rainfall. It also notes that interruptions still occur and that conservation remains important.
For a new build or substantial renovation, have the architect, engineer and permitting authority confirm the rainwater-harvesting and cistern requirements. Ask for the roof catchment calculation, usable storage capacity, filtration plan and maintenance responsibilities in the approved design.
A resilient design may combine roof catchment and a correctly sized cistern with APUA service where available, pumps, filtration and a separate drinking-water treatment strategy. Tank size, pump duty, filtration, maintenance and potable-water treatment must be designed and signed off for the property; no treatment arrangement should be presented as a guarantee of water quality.
Before completion, confirm connection status, expected pressure, tank access, pump power requirements, water-quality testing, cleaning intervals and the local response process for interruptions. APUA's current public information supports the importance of desalination and conservation, not a promise of uninterrupted supply.
- Public supply
- APUA provides water services across Antigua; availability and continuity are location-specific. Confirm the property connection and current service position directly with APUA.
- Rainwater
- Cistern sizing and approval should be confirmed for each project. Do not rely on the 10 Imperial Gallons per square foot figure without current official confirmation.
- Resilience
- Storage, pumping, treatment and maintenance work together. Use an appropriately qualified local designer or engineer.
Power and energy
Design the backup around the actual load.
APUA operates the island's electricity business. A connection, inspection, meter arrangement and any upgrade should be confirmed with APUA and the project's electrical professional before appliances and equipment are specified.
Ask the electrician to verify the service voltage, phase, frequency, earthing and protection for the property. Check imported appliances, pumps, lifts, pool equipment and marine systems against the actual supply before ordering.
A standby generator can support essential loads during outages, but there is no universal villa size or generator specification. A 15kW–35kW range may be a project-specific planning example, not a market-wide norm. The designer should calculate starting currents and essential circuits, then specify fuel storage, ventilation, acoustic treatment, maintenance, automatic transfer equipment and safe isolation in accordance with applicable requirements.
Solar PV and batteries can reduce grid dependence and provide resilience, but output, storage duration, export rules, approvals, fire protection and payback depend on the site and tariff. Obtain a current interconnection assessment and written quotation. Do not describe solar, batteries or a generator as guaranteeing uninterrupted power.
Grid
Verify the service before ordering equipment
Confirm the property's connection, technical characteristics, inspection requirements and any upgrade cost with APUA and a qualified electrician.
Backup
Separate essential from discretionary loads
A load schedule should decide what remains live: refrigeration, pumps, communications, security and selected air-conditioning may require different priorities.
Renewables
Model the site, tariff and approvals
PV and battery proposals need an engineering design, current utility rules, equipment warranties and a maintenance plan.

Telecoms and remote work
Make connectivity a checked service, not a brochure assumption.
APUA identifies itself as a locally owned landline, mobile and internet provider and launched its inet fibre broadband service in 2021. Digicel's Antigua and Barbuda service page describes a Fibre-to-the-Home network, states that service availability is confirmed by address, and advertises plans from 250 Mbps and up. These are provider claims and should be checked for the property's exact address, installation route, contract and current pricing.
Fibre coverage, performance and installation timing can vary between communities and even between nearby properties. Do not promise gigabit service, 300 Mbps performance or uninterrupted connectivity. Ask each provider for a written availability check, expected speeds, installation charge, equipment, service-level terms and outage support.
Starlink's official site provides an availability map and describes residential and on-the-go services across more than 160 countries, territories and markets. Availability, plan terms, local regulatory status, equipment, weather performance and power requirements must be checked for the property's address or vessel before it is described as an available or licensed service in Antigua & Barbuda.
For a remote home or marine operation, a sensible continuity plan may combine a confirmed terrestrial service with a separately verified satellite or mobile option. A generator or battery must be sized to keep the network equipment running; no provider or combination can promise zero interruptions.
- APUA inet
- Fibre broadband is an established APUA service. Coverage and installation must be confirmed by address.
- Digicel
- Digicel advertises Fibre-to-the-Home in Antigua & Barbuda. Its current page says an agent confirms availability after an address check.
- Satellite
- Starlink availability is address-dependent. Check the official map, plan terms and local regulatory position before relying on it.
Before completion
Ask for evidence, not only a specification sheet.
- Water
- What is the approved cistern design, connection status, pump arrangement and maintenance plan?
- Electricity
- What service characteristics, inspection records, load calculations and backup changeover arrangements apply?
- Connectivity
- Which providers confirm service at this address, at what quoted speed, cost and installation date?
- Resilience
- What remains operational during an outage, and who maintains each system?
